Zusammenfassung: | In search of the origins, the meaning and the history of the stained glass panel “Knight with Coat of arms” from the Wartburg‐Museum Eisenach, the first chapter outlines the research made in attempt to identify the evident characteristics, including the general appearance of the panel, the knight’s attire, the depiction of the coat of arms and its likely holders. Even if it was impossible within the scope of this work to entirely uncover the origins of the panel, the investigations made in the second chapter concerning the chapel of Kromsdorf Castle or the stylistic similarity with stained glass panels of the northern German region nevertheless provide results that light the darkness a little. The inclusion of the results of the first chapter provides a further insight into the time of the object’s origins. In the same chapter is summarized the information gained from records and art technical investigations into the former installation of the object in Wartburg Chapel, into the reasons for its removal and its subsequent whereabouts as well as its possible restoration phases. The third chapter finally deals with two possibilities of iconographic interpretation of the depiction of the “Knight with Coat of Arms” and tries to set it into a historical context. |
